An AI hallucination occurs when an AI model generates information that sounds confident and plausible but is factually incorrect, fabricated, or not supported by any source data.

A lawyer uses an AI tool to research case law and includes the results in a court filing. The filing cites six cases that support the argument perfectly. There is one problem: three of those cases do not exist. The AI invented them, complete with realistic-sounding case names, docket numbers, and legal reasoning.
